Keeping Your Switchgear Safe & Reliable
SF6 (sulphur hexafluoride) is used as an insulating and arc-quenching gas in high-voltage switchgear and circuit breakers. Maintaining correct gas purity and pressure is critical for safe operation. A degraded or depleted SF6 charge can lead to insulation failure, arc flash events, and costly equipment damage. CIOS Central provides end-to-end SF6 gas management to keep your equipment operating within specification.
SF6 Gas Testing
On-site testing of your SF6-filled equipment to assess gas condition and confirm whether your switchgear is performing within safe operational limits.
- Dew point (moisture content) testing
- Gas pressure measurement and verification
- Purity testing for decomposition byproducts
- Leak detection using calibrated gas detectors
- Detailed written test report provided
SF6 Gas Analysis
Detailed laboratory-grade analysis of SF6 gas samples to determine contamination levels, breakdown byproducts, and overall gas quality.
- SO₂ and H₂S byproduct detection
- Moisture (ppm) and purity (%) measurement
- Assessment against IEC 60376 & IEC 60480 standards
- Comprehensive condition report with recommendations
- Suitable for pre-maintenance and fault investigation
SF6 Gas Top-Up
Where equipment gas pressure has dropped below the rated operating level, we can safely top up with high-purity SF6 gas to restore it to the manufacturer's specification.
- Certified Grade 5.0 SF6 gas used (99.999% purity)
- Pressure verified against rated nameplate values
- Pre and post top-up readings recorded
- Suitable for circuit breakers, ring main units & GIS
- Documentation provided for asset management records
Full SF6 Gassing
Complete gas charging service for equipment that has been fully evacuated, serviced, or newly installed. Vacuum pull-down followed by a full SF6 charge to the correct rated pressure.
- Vacuum pull-down to remove moisture and air
- Full charge with high-purity SF6 to rated pressure
- Used for post-maintenance re-commissioning
- Applicable to new installations and refurbishments
- All work carried out to AS/NZS and IEC standards
SF6 Gas Recovery
Before any switchgear maintenance or decommissioning, SF6 must be recovered — not released to atmosphere. SF6 has a global warming potential of 23,900 times that of CO₂.
- Safe gas recovery using certified recovery equipment
- Gas stored in approved cylinders — never vented
- Required prior to switchgear maintenance or demolition
- Compliant with the Ozone Protection and SGG Management Act
- Recovery certificates available on request

⚠ SF6 Environmental Compliance Notice
SF6 (sulphur hexafluoride) is a potent greenhouse gas regulated under the Australian Government's Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Management Act 1989. It is illegal to intentionally vent SF6 to atmosphere in Australia. All CIOS Central SF6 recovery procedures comply fully with this legislation. If you are unsure about your compliance obligations, please contact us and we can advise accordingly.
